Karen Spillman Herborn

Karen has been practicing yoga for twenty three years and has taught classes in the Park Rapids, Nevis, Walker, Dorset area for thirteen years. From May to October, she lives on a lake north of Park Rapids and spends the rest of her year in Northfield, Minnesota, where she hones her skills at River Flow Yoga Studio.

In 2011-12, Karen received her 200 RYT certification from Heartwork Yoga Studio in Northfield, and has attended many yoga workshops, retreats and trainings, including a week long intensive retreat in Yelapa, Mexico. She is a retired teacher and administrator, and when she retired after a forty year career in 2012, yoga became and continues to be her part-time career.

Karen has a large family - 4 children and 7 grandchildren, all of whom live in distant places which means travel is a big part of her winter life. In fact, this month she is embarking on her first Viking Voyage to Turkey and Greece. Besides love of adventure, Karen is an avid biker, and when trails are snow covered, she swims in a heated pool in Northfield. Summer passions are gardening, paddle boarding and entertaining family and friends at her lake home.

As Karen “preaches” to her yoga participants: “ The number one reason we do yoga is to become familiar with and appreciate our own bodies.” Everything else is a bonus!

She has dedicated her love of yoga to helping other yogis navigate the challenges that come with healthy aging, and her classes (Vinyasa Slow Flow and Yin) provide many options for modifications and the use of props, leading to a safe, beneficial and meaningful experience.  Since she was introduced to the Yin school of yoga during her Heartwork training, the practice of Yin Yoga has become a passion for Karen. Because she loves to share the benefits of YIN, when you attend one of her classes, you will also become knowledgeable about this many layered, steeped in root wisdom, meditative yoga tradition.
