Aerial yoga uses an aerial hammock which is also referred to as a sling, silk, or fabric that is looped as a prop to support the body in yoga poses. It's a great class for someone who has experience with yoga and looking to explore their practice more deeply, create more bodily awareness, or add more fun and play into their lives!
The aerial yoga hammock helps disperse the body weight so the participant can move in new ways. It can help access the benefits of previously inaccessible yoga poses such as inversions and to take advantage of the MANY benefits of inversions. Many people increase their upper body strength without trying to because they're having so much fun! Some participants say it helps alleviate back pain by decompressing the spine, which could also make a participant a little taller ;). It's a great class for increasing overall core strength and flexibility, among the many other benefits yoga provides for the mind, body and spirit. The floating savasana at the end of class is one of a kind!
Emily will be leading all of the Aerial Yoga classes and is a certified yoga teacher and aerial yoga teacher, earning her Aerial Yoga teacher training from Unnata Aerial Yoga.
SAFETY IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. PLEASE READ THIS IN IT'S ENTIRETY BEFORE CONSIDERING REGISTERING FOR A CLASS
In order to participate in this class safely, Aerial Yoga participants MUST have previous yoga experience. This is so they will have bodily awareness and knowledge of basic yoga poses. Physical requirements also include being able to do a yoga push up or a vinyasa or “chaturanga” (lowering from plank to a low push up, slowly and in control.) Remember to hold on, keep shoulders down and back when raising the body up and listen carefully to instructions.
Remember- If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, please come down from the silks or out of the inversions safely and sit on the ground. If you are unsure of what to do or feel uncomfortable, please, HOLD ON, and ask the instructor! Participants must be 15 years of age or older, if a participant is younger than 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the participants waiver.
Check with your health care professional before beginning any exercise program, especially one involving inverting (going upside down) and going into positions that can cause pressure to certain places on the body. For example, those with heart conditions, inner ear issues or other health concerns should NOT invert (go upside down) as it is a dangerous situation that can cause stroke, heart attack, dizzy spells, or further injury. As with any exercise program there is always a risk of injury.
Those who should be careful and consider to NOT invert (go upside down) include anyone with any of the following conditions: Glaucoma, Hypertension, Uncompensated congestive heart failure, Carotid artery stenosis, Hiatal hernia or spinal instability, Persons receiving anticoagulants or aspirin therapy, Those with a family history of cerebrovascular accidents. High or low blood pressure, History of stroke or heart conditions of any kind, Pregnancy, Excess weight (obesity), Epilepsy, Eye problems, Inner ear problems such as vertigo, Artificial hip(s), Osteoporosis, bone weakness, Cerebral sclerosis, Propensity for fainting, Severe arthritis, Carpal tunnel syndrome, or have received botox that same day. A person having sinusitis or a head cold should also opt out of inverting or temporarily refrain from taking the class until symptoms resolve. If you are above age 55 please talk to your doctor before inverting, you can still participate and opt out of inversions! Other conditions may have limitations as well, ask your doctor to make sure it’s okay for you!
If you have any of the conditions mentioned above, you must consult your doctor before participating in an aerial yoga class. Thank you! Your health and well being is the most important to us.
This is the wavier you must sign BEFORE you will be able to participate. Waiver will be provided at class, please arrive 10-15 minutes early for your class so you are all set for flight time as class is scheduled to begin!
WHAT TO WEAR
Comfortable, form fitting clothing, pants that go over your knees, and a shirt that covers your arm-pits (helps to keep the silks clean), onesies or jumpsuits are nice but not necessary. Please refrain from wearing any clothes that have sequins, gems or zippers because they may snag the fabrics! You can have bare feet in the slings or wear yoga socks (with bottom grips). Please plan on removing all jewelry before participating in aerial yoga, it could catch, snagging the fabric, injuring yourself or the silks.
Please help us keep the silk hammocks clean and safe! Before class, please refrain from applying lotion or oil to your skin, hands, or hair. Please check fingernails and toenails for any rough edges that can snag or create runs in the fabric. Please do not come right after eating a large meal but do not come hungry either. Eating an average meal an hour or two before is typically ideal. Doing inversions with a completely empty stomach can cause heart burn. Every one is different, find the right balance for you!)
